Delaware State head coach Desean Jackson (Pictured in white sweatshirt behind huddle) looks on as the team makes adjustments during a break in action. Jackson led the Hornets to an 8-4 record and second place finish in the MEAC this past season.
In a battle of former NFL teammates, Norfolk State (1-8) and Delaware State (6-3) squared off in MEAC action. Michael Vick’s Spartans got off to a slow start in conference play, but came ready to play versus 2025 HBCU Coach of the Year Desean Jackson’s Hornets.
Delaware State’s All-MEAC backfield duo of James Jones and Marquis Gillis entered the game as one of FCS football’s top tandems.
They lived up to the billing.
Jones -a Baltimore, Maryland native– rushed for 109 yards on just 10 carries. That total included a 76-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Gillis’ 79 yards on 17 carries supplemented a rushing attack that accounted for 201 rushing yards on 41 attempts.
On the other side, Norfolk State quarterback Otto Kuhns posted his second 300-yard passing effort (65%, 311 yards, 3 TDs) of the season. Wide receivers J.J. Evans (5 REC, 124 yards, TD) and DreSean Kendrick (9 REC, 112 yds, TD) both eclipsed the 100-yard receiving mark.
Through three quarters the Hornets held just a seven-point lead. The two teams combined for 28 points in an exciting fourth quarter.
