Houston Texans first-round pick Keylan Rutledge brings a tone-setter mentality to the team’s offensive line. The back-to-back All-American guard combines excellent feet with a nasty approach as a run blocker. For the Texans- who ranked 22nd in rushing offense a season ago- he ranks as a welcome addition to the team’s offensive line.
O-Line concentration
This offseason has been about general manager Nick Caserio’s concentration on fortifying that line. One of the league’s best traders, Caserio dealt versatile OL Tytus Howard to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick.
Soon thereafter, the team signed former Cleveland Browns Pro Bowl OG Wyatt Teller to a two-year deal. They went on to bring in former Arizona Cardinal Evan Brown. The 29-year old has started 68 games in the last five seasons for three different teams. The organization’s biggest move, however, was snatching right tackle Braden Smith away from the Colts on a two-year deal. The three-year extension given to former Vikings second-round pick Ed Ingram only enhances the group’s depth.
Culture fit
Enter Rutledge.
Whenever you watch him play (see video below), he wants to send a message on every block. The former Georgia state champion shot putter was named a permanent team captain at MTSU before transferring to Georgia Tech. Cesario described his newest tone-setter when meeting with reporters after the first round.
“The things that stand out about him….toughness, violence, physicality, playing style, his intelligence,” Cesario explained. “The guy wants to step on your throat on every play, which sort of embodies what our football team is about.”
In terms of what he means for the team’s run game, Cesario views the addition of Rutledge as a potential schematic match for the Texans.
“We’re gonna run the football this year,” Cesario said. “It was an area that we felt like we wanted to and needed to improve here in the offseason. Hopefully, we’ve done that. And I’d say ‘Big Red’ (Rutledge’s moniker) hopefully is a part of that. Like, ‘where’s he’s gonna play?’, who the hell knows? We’ll figure out who the best five guys are and put the group out there that we think is gonna help us the most.”
Complementary football
In the team’s playoff game against New England, the relative lack of a consistent run game inhibited the team. Its leading rusher that afternoon was rookie Woody Marks (14 carries, 17 yards, fumble lost). Correspondingly, it put undue pressure on quarterback CJ Stroud, who threw four interceptions without his two top targets.
The team’s defense was outstanding in the contest. Further proof is that they allowed just 3-of-14 conversions on third down to the eventual AFC champion New England Patriots.
Establishing a consistent run game began with the March 2026 trade for former Detroit Lion David Montgomery. And it has continued into Day 1 of the 2026 NFL Draft. As a result, how Cesario attacks the rest of the process will be worth watching.
One thing is for sure.
The addition of Rutledge enhances a nasty streak which protrudes throughout the Texans roster.
