The Pittsburgh Pirates selected West Virginia’s Carlson Reed, a Marietta, Georgia native, with the 104th overall pick of the fourth round in this year’s MLB Draft. Reed was the third of 14 pitchers the Pirates selected over the course of this year’s proceedings. His fastball reaches the mid-to-high 90s and serves as a go-to pitch during the late innings of games.
A first-team All-Big 12 performer, Reed was a legitimate closer for the Mountaineers in 2023, notching seven saves in 25 games while posting a respectable 2.4 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In 38 innings pitched, Reed posted a 2.61 ERA.
The former Mountaineer possesses a longer delivery yet deft pick off move, which we spotlight in his match up with Oklahoma in the 2022 Big 12 Tournament.
