Blake Watson’s move to RB pays dividends for Tigers, Monarchs

Former Memphis running back Blake Watson averaged 26.4 yards per kickoff return in 2019 as a part-time wide receiver for Old Dominion.
Blake Watson’s 2021 move from wide receiver to running back came immediately after Old Dominion canceled its 2020 campaign. Coincidentally, Watson rushed for over 1,100 yards in his first season at running back for the Monarchs.
Since transferring to Memphis, the pass catching skills have not vanished.
In fact, last season versus Missouri, he caught nine passes for 83 yards and one touchdown. He continued that trend with an excellent week of work catching the ball at the 2024 East-West Shrine Bowl. There are questions surrounding Watson’s 190-pound frame entering the NFL.
For context, Buffalo Bills starting running back James Cook weighs under 200 pounds, as does Los Angeles Rams starter Kyren Williams. In terms of playing style, Watson mirrors Williams more than Cook in that he plays the game beyond his years.
Watson’s 2024 East-West Shrine performance largely stood out for itsoverall activity. While Southern Miss running back Frank Gore, Jr. earned MVP honors with an 87-yard, touchdown performance, it was Watson who led the West squad with 12 carries (46 yards). On top of that, the former wide receiver led the West squad with six receptions for 65 yards.
It was a typical efficient night for Watson, who goes about his business in a workmanlike manner.
That was also the case on Memphis’ 2024 Pro Day, as Watson told The Commercial Appeal:
His testing numbers on the Pro Day were more than just workmanlike.
The 2024 Hula Bowl Offensive MVP posted an 11-foot-3-inch broad jump and recorded a 41 1/2-inch vertical jump. He also blazed the 40-yard dash in the 4.4-second range.
Even if he does not get drafted, Watson has used the postseason as a potential springboard to an NFL opportunity.
